Building permits for new housing in the Pittsburgh region jumped 12.8 percent in October compared to October 2006, the biggest monthly jump in almost two years, Tall Timber Group, a Ross-based construction market research and tracking firm, said Tuesday.

Permits for single-family houses rose 13.9 percent to 188 in October, and permits were issued for 111 multifamily units last month, a 10 percent increase over the same period in 2006.

For the first 10 months, 3,410 permits were issued in all, a 6.4 percent decline from 3,642 at the same time last year, said Jeff Burd, Tall Timber president.
